What is Self-Care?

When I first discovered Laura’s Six Intimacy Skills, I learned that self-care is the most important skill of all skills.

It is my responsibility to make me happy, not anyone else’s.

First thing to do, is to list things that make you happy.

It seems like an easy enough task, right?

OK….

So let’s make this list.

I was stuck like this for weeks. I’m not exaggerating.

I couldn’t think of even one thing that made me happy.

I then started to ask myself, when was the last time I was happy?

OH! I remembered!

Seeing my kids smiles make me happy!

  1. Seeing my kids smile.

  2. Seeing my husband smile.

This process was really an eye-opening one. I had forgotten how to be happy, let alone, doing things to make myself happy.

I asked other women learning Laura Doyle’s Intimacy Skills what is on their self-care list to get more ideas.

Then I eventually came up with:

  1. Seeing my kids smile.

  2. Seeing my husband smile.

  3. Receiving a massage.

  4. Singing a song or do karaoke.

  5. Watching Japanese TV comedy shows.

  6. Dance.

  7. Taking a bath.

  8. Eating something sweet.

  9. Drinking a sweet coffee.

  10. Talking with old friends on FaceTime.

Just coming up with 10 items was hard for me, but I invite you to at least come up with 20 items.

This list could be improved but at least it’s a good start to be mindful of your own happiness.

Then I invite you to do at least 3 items a day, because trying to make yourself happy is absolutely something you CAN do!
